Medical/Dental Clinic Day #3
Definitely a day to replace electrolytes! It was hot and we were busy! The medical team saw about 130 patients and the dental team pulled 54 teeth. No matter the number of patients Dr. Justice served he made sure everyone received a proper welcome and gave his full attention to them. Theresa, RN, was able to provide some well needed pain control to a patient with a severe abcess from a infected tooth that Elise (Dental Assistant) pulled out. There is no doubt that this person would have become very ill. Chris has also been right by Elise’s side pulling teeth as Linda assisted both of them. Jane, RN, was running around playing pharmacist while Shereen,RN, was getting the evil eye from all the intramuscular injections given to the little ones. Lindsey also helped in medical while planning the logistics for the day. Due to the high numbers we agreed to come back again tomorrow to see some of the overflow. One thing is for sure- these people need some love and many came just to be “seen” and loved on. Our Physical Therapist, Rachel, had a very grateful patient… A young woman had her pelvis broken in 3 places from being buried under rubble from the earthquake and left today with a great smile now that she has hope of improving with all the new exercises and stretches she learned. Barbara was continuing to pray with and for the visitors while Ravi was testing people for reading glasses. Julie, who organized all the arts and crafts, was making new friends while Stacey came up with some creative teaching ideas and had kids teach kids! Kathryn was all about the kids and created lots of laughter. Another highlight.. It was Barbara’s birthday and Madame Pastor (Pastor Joseph’s wife) welcomed us again with a huge table literally full of food, settings for 16 people, and balloons, streamers, and a cake. We ended the day singing “Happy Birthday” in French and English! Tomorrow we will be going to do some construction and tent repair. Once again we will be reminded how blessed we all are.

‘What you do unto the least of these, you do unto Me…” Matt 25: 40 We began our day in God’s Word looking at the difference between goats and sheep, the difference between reaching out and holding back, the difference in being a stumbling block and a stepping stone. And tonight, as we reflect upon the day, we see how in the Masters Hand, we were all we asked to be – sheep, reaching out and being stepping stones for all we came in contact with. Today our second clinic was located in The New Jerusalem Church. This church had been praying for a medical clinic, and as a result of a contact made by our previous team in March, today we were an answer to their many prayers. While the clinic treated 170 adults and children, we had 60+ children participate in crafts. There aren’t pills for some of the sicknesses the doctors are seeing. There isn’t much they can do about the pains suffered from sleeping on the hard ground in tent cities and the stress associated with fear of falling buildings. But that is where we are seeing prayer make the difference. After each patient is seen, we have prayer stations set up. Each adult and child is asked to tell their story about the day of the earthquake, and each are prayed for. We are learning much about prayer, and much about The Healer.

1,2,3… Today we witnessed what happens when three languages (French, Creole and English), and two countries (Haiti and America) comes together to worship ONE God. Pastor Josef and his congregation of beloved saints ushered us into worship, where seemingly the sound of many angels wings swept us up into oneness. There we stood, in the epic center of where the earthquake took place swaying, praying and singing in the presence before our God who is never shaken. Hearts were warmed as one of our interpreters, Osborn, said ‘The reason I am alive is to sing to His Glory”, and then led us in the song ‘God of Wonders’. Following that, our team member David spoke words of encouragement over the congregation… ‘for such a time as this – you being God’s salt, have been chosen and set apart to make a difference for Haiti’. One of our other team leaders, Dwight, also shared testimony of how salt spreads, telling the story of how Mariners Church became involved with Pastor Josef. His words of encouragement reminded us all what a difference one grain of salt can make. Following the service, we set up our first medical facility. In a matter of minutes, the church transformed from a house of worship into a medical clinic. God blessed our team with unity as we each served others, and each other. It was as though God had also prepared us for such a time as this. Special thank you’s to each who contributed to our financial needs, and to those who are praying at this time for the team. Tonight we have been blessed with rain that has provided cool breezes. But as we give thanks for this refreshment, we are very much aware of the misery this brings to those who are in tents, and the mud the rains bring. As you read this, take time to pray for the people who are without so much, and in need of more than we can give.
